Pelvic Health Myofascial Release Therapy

Pelvic Health MFR Therapy at Feel Better Bristol

Change the threat, change the dysfunction, change the pain

At Feel Better Bristol, we recognise that pelvic health is essential for overall well-being. Our therapist Zoe has undertaken specialist pelvic health training and is dedicated to helping women find relief from pelvic pain through Myofascial Release (MFR) therapy for the pelvic floor and the muscles around the pelvis. A large part of the therapy is helping to minimise threat to your nervous system and altering the brain’s pain response.

What is Pelvic Health Myofascial Release?

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a gentle, hands-on technique that targets “fascia”. This is the connective tissue surrounding all our cells, muscles and organs. In the context of pelvic health, clients with pelvic pain may have multiple tender points causing pain and dysfunction. MFR may help relieve taut tissues that are compressing myofascial and neuromuscular structures and leading to pain and spasms.

The aim with pelvic MFR therapy is to:

  • Alleviate pain
  • Improve mobility
  • Enhance pelvic function

MFR is applied externally to treat muscles supporting the pelvis and, when necessary, internal release of the pelvic floor muscles is discussed and agreed with the client. During an internal examination, a muscle may be identified as either short or tense, or tender at a specific point. There may be radiating pain to other areas. A gentle, sustained pressure is used to unwind and mobilise the muscle into lengthening and help lower pain sensations and improve control in the pelvic floor muscles.

Zoe will look at the function of the body as a whole and talk to you about the brain’s response to pain. It is often helpful to have education on how to relax and stretch muscles both during and after treatment to maximise the effects of a session. This may include a suggestion for tools such as pelvic wands and dilators so you can take control of your own self care at home after the appointment.

It’s important that manual therapy is never painful. Your feedback and comfort will always be a priority. After a session, the pelvic floor muscles should feel relaxed and not too sore.

Who May Benefit?

Our pelvic health MFR therapy is suitable for:

  • Women experiencing pelvic pain: Whether due to menstrual discomfort, bladder pain syndrome, prolapse, endometriosis, or other conditions, our therapy can help manage symptoms.
  • Pregnant women: MFR can alleviate discomfort during pregnancy and prepare your body for labor.
  • Postpartum recovery: We support recovery after childbirth, addressing issues like diastasis recti and pelvic floor dysfunction, including incontinence.
  • Individuals with chronic pain: If you suffer from pelvic pain, low back pain, endometriosis or fibromyalgia, our approach may provide relief and help restore your daily function
  • Other conditions: We also strive to help women experiencing vulvodynia, painful intercourse, coccyx pain and hip pain.

What to Expect During Your Session

During your first appointment, Zoe will conduct a thorough assessment to understand your unique needs and health history. This helps identify factors that may be contributing to your symptoms and creates a safe, comfortable space for your healing journey.

  1. Personalised plan: Based on your assessment, a treatment plan will be tailored to your specific needs.
  2. Gentle techniques: Gentle, sustained pressure will be used to release restrictions in the fascia. The pace of the session is comfortable for you, and you can pause or stop at any time. While therapy is not meant to be painful, some minor discomfort may be experienced afterward.
  3. Empowerment through client education: Zoe believes in empowering clients with knowledge. Throughout your treatment, you will have guidance on self-care techniques and exercises to enhance your healing process. Your self-care plays a crucial role in your overall treatment.
