Myofascial Release Therapy

Myofascial Release Therapy is a soft tissue therapy that helps to reduce pain associated with restrictions throughout the fascial network in the body. Trauma, poor posture, ageing, injury and inflammation lead to multiple tensions and adhesions in our fascial system. Restoring the fascia back to an optimal, hydrated form can promote a positive physical and mental impact within the body.

MFR is carried out with no oil and minimal clothing, allowing a therapist to feel and work deeper into the myofascial tissue. The technique involves the use of skilled ‘listening’ hands to release tension found in the fascial chains and enable long lasting change in the tissues. Some of the techniques are extremely subtle and gentle. Other direct techniques work deeper into the layers of the myofascia surrounding our tissues and organs.

Myofascial release is often felt to be deeply relaxing and satisfying. The movements are slow and sustained, and therefore never painful. At times there may be some discomfort, but the body really wants to feel a release of tension and amazing changes in the body are possible.

I use MFR to help with symptoms of many different conditions, often in combination with massage. In particular I have had great success with chronic conditions; fibromyalgia, complex injuries and chronic pain. I help guide the body to find ways to heal naturally, when other therapies have only provided short term benefits.

Potential benefits of myofascial release may include:

  • Less pain
  • Improved heath & wellbeing
  • Encouraging healing from injury
  • Increased proprioception & interoception
  • Reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • Improved mobility and joint range of motion
  • Improvement in sporting performance
